Forum: GratefulDead Subject: Carlos & me go flashin' my keys....

Before I ever saw the lyrics on paper, I thought Truckin’ started with “Girls (or Carlos?) and me go flashing my keys out on Main St.” Turns out this is an oft-misheard lyric. Here are more that others have botched:

Tastes like chicken when I speed

Let's rape the women of Sparta

If the hunter don't get you The blind man will

Shovel in the way, leaving me out

Speeding afro....

Wake up to find out that you are disguised as a squirrel.
The heart has its peaches, its groveland and thoughts of its own.
Wake now, discover that you are the song that the Mormon brings.
The heart has its seizures, its evenings, and songs of its own

Brown-eyed women in red flannel jeans

Wedding castles thrown at me for playing in the band

Got hair so long he's got to calling it home

Anyone knows from sin

You imagine monsieur, champagne from a boob
For a taste of an elegant pie.

She can dance occasional rhythm

Bakes my chicken when I sleep

Chocolate curtains, I don't care

Come in Uncle John’s bed

Minus Twelve minus twelve. Miiiinus Twelve.

We also sang That's right we're swimmin' in water, but I see it's been used.

Good one... with the number of times they repeat 'minus twelve' in that tune, you would end up with one big negative number if you summed it all up!

Just remembered some more...
Mmmmmm...Fritos. Mmmmmm....Ham & Cheese. (Liberty)

Corinna, Chicken and Beef!

When we were touring, we had a lot of goofy names/lyrics for songs. I just can't seem to remember most of them. A lot had food references because we were always so damn hungry on tour.

Nice one Pete - I like the Liberty lyrics. No doubt for lots of folks, post-smoking, Fritos and ham/cheese probably sounded heavenly by the time the band got to that tune!

"Wake up to find out that you are disguised as a squirrel"

Thanks for that. Always appreciate a good laugh to start the day.

Heh. I completely forgot about this one, but it's what I heard for the first couple of years:

A few days in the saddle, and you know my body hurt,
Indian Summer, I took off my shirt ...

Well that is about as respectable a mishear as you can get.... Indian summer makes perfect sense.

Enjoyed your Donna Jean lyric too. Poor Donna - she takes alot of abuse here, but wasn't she, at least kind of, eye candy back in the '70s? If I look at the Grateful Dead Movie through the eyes of a '70's teenager, I can kind of see it.

For about six months I thought the first line of Truckin' was:

"Donna's with me and I'm flashing my keys out on main street"

Jesus, I was a weird kid ...

Well, it bein' Bobby I sure can't swear that he didn't change it from time to time - "grabbed a bottle, cracked him in the jaw", for example - but I believe that it is really:

it bein' summer, I took off my shirt ...

Chico, don't be discouraged,
The Man he ain't so hard to understand.
Chico, if you try now,
I know that you can lend a helping hand.

Because there's good in everyone
And a new day has begun
You can see the morning sun if you try.

And I know, things will be better
Oh yes they will for Chico and the Man
Yes they will for Chico and the Man.

For the 2 July 71 Fillmore show, PITB, I always thought Bob sang:

"Uh...pub..bub-bub a bub-bub
duh...bub da bubba duh
Up bbbbubb dub ah
Dubba bub da bub"

But, then it turns out, he did...just listen.
